Pahela Baishak
The First day of Bangla new year is called 'Pahela Baishakh'. The day has a special significance to the people of Bangladesh as it is a part of Bengali culture and tradition. In keeping with the age-old tradition, people from all walks of life, irrespective of their ethnic identity or religious beliefs, celebrate the day with traditional festivities. On this day, the whole of Bangladesh is in a festive mood. People wake up early in the morning, have a bath and wear traditional clothes. Women wear white sarees with red borders and adorn themselves with colourful churies and flowers, while men dress themselves in pajamas and punjabis. The day's first programme begins at Ramna Batamul in Dhaka organised by leading cultural organisation 'Chhayanaut'. The cultural programme begins just at sunrise with the famous Tagore-song Esho-heBoishakh, Esho Esho. The most impressive part of the celebration is 'Mangal Shobhajatra', the biggest carnival of the country organised by the Fine Arts students of Dhaka University. It symbolises the traditional practices of Bengali culture and contemporary worries or happiness in the national life. Different socio-cultural organisations and educational institutions celebrate the day with their own cultural programmes. Baishakhi Mela' is also an important part of Pahela Baishakh. It is a fair held throughout the country. Shopkeepers open Halkhata, a fresh account book. The celebration of Pahela Baishak marks a day of cultural unity for the nation. It strengthens solidarity, uniting people irrespective of caste, creed and religion.
