Adolescence
Adolescence is the time in a
person's life when he or she develops from a child into an adult.
Adolescence is the most important stage for a child to reach adulthood.
It is the period in human growth and development that occurs after
childhood and before adulthood. The mental, psychological and sexual
attitudes and behaviors of an individual are basically shaped in this
very stage. The adolescents are neither children nor adults because they
represent a specific stage of physical and psychological development
from childhood to adulthood. They experience several significant
biological, physical and psychological changes which mould their lives
and prepare them for their adulthood responsibility. They also face some
potential health risks such as intentional and unintentional injuries,
unwanted pregnancy, mental hazard and adjustment problems, etc.
Environmental factors including family, school, neighbourhood, policies
and social cues either support or challenge adolescent's health and
well-being. Addressing the positive development of adolescents
facilitates their adoption of healthy behaviours and helps to ensure a
healthy and productive future adult population. So adolescents should be
taught about the very issues related to adolescence so that their
physical, mental and psychological development can be smoother. The
society and community can play the significant role of ensuring a favourable atmosphere for them.
