Dowry is the activity taken place at the time of marriage when the bride’s family transfers wealth to the groom’s family in the form of cash, movable properties, or immovable properties. The existence of the dowry system is hard to trace, but it has long existed in Bangladesh.

The dowry system brings a dark cloud above the heads of the bride’s family. Fathers of young girls fear the day of their daughter’s marriage and save money for that particular day. In rural parts of Bangladesh, the dowry system is quite more prevalent, along with casteism. Dowry is nothing but a nightmare for women. Every woman goes through the ugly phase, where she is made to feel like she is a liability.

The country is continuously fighting against the dowry system. Various NGOs have come forward and raised the issue by spreading awareness among the population. The beautiful gesture of providing a helping hand towards the newly wedded has taken an ugly turn.

Dowry is a punishable crime, and anyone who is, by any means, tries to support or even hide the truth will have to face legal consequences. Both the parties, the giver and taker, of dowry will be punished under the Dowry Prohibition Act of 2018.

তারিখ : ১৭/০২/২০১৪ ইং বরাবর চেয়ারম্যান, ৬নং দুলালপুর ইউনিয়ন পরিষদ। হােমনা, কুমিল্লা। বিষয় : নলকূপ স্থাপনের জন্য আবেদন। জনাব, যথাযথ সম্মানপূর্বক বিনীত নিবেদন এই যে, আমরা আপনার ইউনিয়নের জয়নগর গ্রামের অধিবাসী। আমাদের গ্রামটি একটি জনবহুল ও বর্ধিষ্ণু গ্রাম। এ গ্রামের লােকসংখ্যা প্রায় দুই হাজার। কিন্তু পরিতাপের বিষয় এই যে, এ গ্রামে পানীয় জলের তেমন সুব্যবস্থা নেই। স্থানীয় প্রাথমিক বিদ্যালয়ের সামনে অবস্থিত গ্রামের একমাত্র নলকূপটি দীর্ঘদিন যাবত পরিত্যাক্ত অবস্থায় আছে। গ্রামে যে দু-চারটি হাজা-মজা পুকুর আছে, সেগুলােও আবর্জনা ও জঞ্জালে পিরপূর্ণ। এমনকি, ফাল্গুন-চেত্র মাসে এগুলোও শুকিয়ে যায়। ফলে গ্রামবাসীদের পানির অভাবে দুঃখের সীমা থাকে না। নিতান্ত বাধ্য হয়ে নদী ও ডােবা থেকে সংগৃহীত দূষিত পানি পান করার ফলে প্রতি বছরই কলেরা, টাইফয়েড, আমাশয় ইত্যাদি মারাত্মক রােগে আক্রান্ত হয়ে এ গ্রামের বহুলােক অকালে মৃত্যুবরণ করে। এমতাবস্থায় সংশ্লিষ্ট কর্তৃপক্ষের নিকট আবেদন, অনতিবিলম্বে উক্ত গ্রামে অন্তত তিনটি নলকুপ স্থাপন করে জনজীবনে শান্তি ও স্বস্তি ফিরিয়ে আনতে মর্জি হয়। বিনীত নিবেদক গ্রামবাসীর প...
